The Merser & Co. Double Barrel Rum is the flagship product of this London blending house. It is a rum that celebrates the art of "marrying," combining different Caribbean origins to achieve a harmonious, rich profile free of any artificial additives.
Merser & Co. - Double Barrel London Rum
The Double Barrel is a masterful blend of carefully selected rums from Jamaica, Barbados, and the Dominican Republic, aged up to 12 years. The name "Double Barrel" comes from its unique aging process: after initial maturation in their countries of origin, the rums are brought to London, blended, and rested for a second period (six months) in Scottish oak barrels.
This "London marrying" allows the distinct personalities of the Caribbean rums — the potency of Jamaica, the elegance of Barbados, and the smoothness of the Dominican Republic — to merge into a unique spirit. True to the philosophy of 19th-century merchants, Merser & Co. adds no sugar or colorants (caramel), allowing the golden color and sweetness to be the natural result of time and wood.
Sensory Profile
-
Color: Pale gold, natural and brilliant.
-
Nose: Inviting and complex on the nose. Immediate notes of vanilla, pastry, and ripe tropical fruit (banana and pineapple emerge, followed by a hint of toasted oak and a light spiciness reminiscent of Jamaican pepper.
-
Taste: Remarkably smooth yet characterful on the palate. The structure is balanced, with flavors of toffee, orange peel, and milk chocolate. The Jamaican component contributes a pleasant aromatic depth without being overly pungent.
-
Finish: Clean, persistent, and dry, with echoes of sweet oak and a delicate note of dried fruit.
Production Process: The rums are distilled using both Pot Stills and continuous columns in the Caribbean. Once in London, the Master Blender performs the blending in small batches. The final resting period in oak barrels in a continental climate like London's slows down the extraction of tannins, promoting micro-oxygenation that smooths the palate.
Serving Suggestions (Mixology): This is an extremely versatile rum. Its elegance makes it perfect to enjoy neat or with a single large ice cube. In cocktails, it excels in classics where the quality of the spirit is the star, such as an Old Fashioned or a Palmetto.
