The Montebello Rhum Vieux 3 Ans is the expression that marks the Guadeloupean distillery's entry into the world of great aged rums. Despite its declared young age, this Rhum Agricole benefits from the extreme climate of Basse-Terre, which accelerates maturation and gives the distillate a depth and smoothness usually found in much older products.
Montebello - Rhum Vieux Agricole 3 Ans
The Montebello 3 Anni is made from pure sugarcane juice (vesou) grown on the volcanic soils of Guadeloupe. After slow fermentation and continuous column distillation, the rum is left to rest in small American oak barrels previously used for aging Bourbon. Montebello's uniqueness lies in its storage method: the barrels rest in metal containers under the tropical sun; the extremely high heat increases evaporation (the so-called "angels' share") and pushes the rum deep into the wood fibers. The result is a vibrant "vieux" rum, which retains the vegetal freshness of sugarcane, enriching it with elegant tertiary nuances.
Sensory Profile
-
Color: Old gold with amber reflections, very bright.
-
Nose: The opening is sweet and spicy. Notes of vanilla, salted caramel, and toasted dried fruit are clearly perceptible, followed by a herbaceous hint of fresh cane and a touch of candied citrus.
-
Palate: On the palate, it is surprisingly soft and round. The attack is buttery, with returns of honey and sweet wood, balanced by a slight peppery note. The structure is lean but persistent, with a finish that turns towards blond tobacco and dehydrated exotic fruit.
Production Process Distilled from fresh sugarcane juice, this rum is aged for a minimum of 36 months in oak barrels. The mastery of the Marsolle family ensures that the wood aging does not overpower the terroir's identity, maintaining the mineral and vegetal profile typical of Montebello's agricultural rums.
Serving Suggestion It is an extremely versatile rum. It can be enjoyed neat at room temperature to appreciate its evolving nuances, or used as a noble base for classic cocktails such as a Mai Tai or an Old Fashioned in its agricultural version. Also excellent paired with a piece of 70% dark chocolate.
