With the Lagrein 2024, Sankt Pauls Winery offers us the most authentic interpretation of one of South Tyrol's iconic indigenous grape varieties. Cultivated on the warm, sandy soils of the valley floor in Appiano, this red stands out for its chromatic intensity, its fruity vigor, and a pleasant drinkability that makes it a timeless classic.
Sankt Pauls - Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2024: The Strength of the Terroir
The Lagrein 2024 from Sankt Pauls is a red wine of great character and typicality. This grape variety, which thrives in alluvial and warm soils, finds ideal conditions in the surroundings of Appiano to express its full intensity. The 2024 vintage yielded healthy grapes rich in extract, which the winery expertly transformed into a wine with a modern, clean profile, deeply rooted in tradition. It is a red that does not seek the opulence of wood, but rather focuses entirely on the purity of the fruit and freshness, offering a satisfying, velvety, and well-balanced sip.
Sensory Profile In the glass, it presents an intense, almost impenetrable ruby red color with lively violet reflections. The bouquet is an explosion of wild berries: blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry intertwine with floral notes of violet and a characteristic hint of dark chocolate and liquorice. On the palate, the entry is warm and enveloping; the tannins are soft and well-polished, supported by a pleasant freshness that makes the sip dynamic. The finish is persistent, with a clear return of ripe fruit and a light spicy note.
Vinification and Aging The grapes are hand-picked and vinified with temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with constant pump-overs to extract color and aromas. To preserve the varietal fragrance of Lagrein, aging takes place predominantly in large wooden barrels and steel. This choice allows the wine to mature slowly, softening the tannins without masking the primary notes of the grape, maintaining its alpine energy intact.
Food Pairings An extremely versatile red, an ideal companion to local cuisine. It pairs divinely with red meat dishes, game, and roasts. It is perfect with South Tyrolean speck, cheese dumplings, Tyrolean goulash, and aged cheeses. Also surprising with flavorful pasta dishes with meat sauces.
